Five yoga mats worth practising on
A mat is the one piece of equipment that decides whether you unroll it at 6am or step over it. Here are five that earn the floor space.

There is a small, unglamorous truth about a home practice: it lives or dies on friction. Not the friction of the mat — the friction of getting to it. A mat that curls at the corners, smells of rubber, or slides under a damp palm becomes a reason to skip. A good mat quietly removes the excuse.
We tested for four things a desk-bound body actually needs: grip when hands sweat, cushion for knees that spend nine hours folded under a chair, weight you'd carry to a studio, and a surface you can wipe down between a lunchtime flow and a two o'clock call.
1. The all-day grip mat
If your practice runs warm — vinyasa, a heated class, or simply a small flat in July — grip is the only specification that matters. Natural rubber with a polyurethane top layer gets tackier as it gets wetter, which is exactly backwards from what you'd expect and exactly what you want.
Manduka PRO / GRP-style natural rubber mat
$$$Dense, heavy, essentially permanent. The mat you buy once.

Table top, low lunge, any kneeling shape — these are where corporate knees complain. A 6mm mat is the sweet spot: enough padding to be forgiving, not so much that standing balances turn into a wobble.
6mm cushioned TPE yoga mat
$Light, closed-cell so it doesn't absorb sweat, gentle on joints.

1.5mm, folds into a carry-on, lays over a hotel-gym mat of unknown history. It is not comfortable. That is not its job. Its job is to make a Tuesday in Frankfurt look like a Tuesday at home.
Foldable 1.5mm travel yoga mat
$$Packs flat into a laptop bag. Best used over a thicker mat or carpet.

Cork is naturally antimicrobial, smells faintly of a good wine cellar, and grips harder the damper it gets. It also looks like an object rather than gym equipment, which matters more than we admit when the mat lives in a living room.
Cork and rubber yoga mat
$$Quiet aesthetics, self-cleaning surface, excellent wet grip.

Our favourite category, because it is the one nobody buys. A small folding mat kept in a drawer or under a desk turns eleven spare minutes into a practice: a few rounds of cat-cow, a supported forward fold, three minutes of legs up the wall before the afternoon.
Compact folding exercise mat
$Lives in a drawer. Rescues the 3pm slump.

- Sweat a lot? Prioritise a rubber or cork top layer over PVC.
- Sore knees? 6mm, no less.
- Travelling monthly? Buy the thin one as a second mat, never as your only one.
- Sharing a small home? Choose a colour you'd leave out — a rolled mat in sight gets used.
The best mat is the one that is already unrolled.
